Many celebrities and top athletes have a homeopath on speed dial and here some of them share their stories of how they feel alternative medicines have boosted their health:
James Ellington, Team GB sprinter, 26 My health is my top priority, from eating a balanced diet to the types of medicine I use. Training six times a week is incredibly demanding and it’s more important than ever to keep my body in the best possible condition. Homeopathy offers me a positive and natural way to prevent sporting ailments such as exertion, muscular pain and aching joints, without any residual effects on my performance. I use remedies such as Ruta grav, which helps treat sprained ligaments, Gelsemium for pre-race jitters, Arnica for bruising and Bellis perennis to treat exertion. They all offer athletes a natural alternative to traditional and sometimes harmful medicines.
Peter Hain, Labour MP, 62 I’ve now used homeopathy for some years and am convinced of its therapeutic value. I first came to know about it through my baby son who had eczema for a couple of years. With conventional treatment, it was getting progressively worse and at age four he also developed asthma. We turned to homeopathy out of desperation and were stunned with the positive results. Since then I have used it for a wide variety of illnesses, but I rely on Arnica as it’s good for bruises. Homeopathy and conventional medicines must be side by side under the NHS.
Susan Hampshire, actress, 75 I started using homeopathy over 40 years ago and have relied on it to treat myself and my family ever since. I keep a wide selection of remedies on hand at home and use them to treat anything from bruises to throat complaints. Treatments include Arnica for bruising and muscle aches, Bryonia to alleviate swollen joints and Rhus tox for joint pain. I also use Aconite to treat shock, Hypericum for injuries to nerves, Hepar sulph can treat otitis, Ruta grav for sprains and strains, Argent nit for splinter-like pains and Arum triph to help shift fevers and colds. I found Hypericum and Calendula, which I use regularly to treat my skin, particularly effective. Hypericum is known to treat dry, chapped skin.
Louise Jameson, former Doctor Who actress, 61 My two sons and I have taken homeopathic remedies for 26 years. Tom had his first at two, when he was given Pulsatilla for a snotty cold and he has not had an antibiotic from that day on. Harry was next with Phosphorous for a bad chesty cough. I then joined with Calcarea carbonica, which I used for ‘worn-out mother syndrome’. Homeopathy has seen me through coughs, colds, operations, emotional and physical problems, both acute and constitutional. But most recently, Sulphur has eased me through the menopause, without having to even think about more toxic medicines.
Annabel Croft, former tennis pro, 46 I use homeopathy for myself and my family to treat everything from early signs of coughs and colds to sports injuries. I embrace it as a way of life, visit my homeopath every few months and use a whole host of remedies. Homeopathy has worked wonders for me personally and I cannot deny its effectiveness. I have raised my three children on homeopathy, using remedies whenever they’ve been unwell. Taking a leaf out of their mother’s book, my children have even been known to lecture the school doctor on benefits of homeopathy over traditional medicines.
Gaby Roslin,TV presenter, 48 I find homeopathy incredibly useful for keeping me and my family healthy. I depend on it and have a kit of homeopathic medicine ready for what my day-to-day life might bring. Homeopathy works extremely well on children. When my daughter was 18 months old, she had a lingering cough. I took her to see a homeopath and within days of taking the medicine prescribed, her cough cleared. This and many other visits to the homeopath with excellent outcomes have convinced me of its effectiveness.
Jo Wood, 57, model and TV personality I’m a great believer in all things natural, and homeopathy has always worked wonders for me. Lavender in particular is incredibly useful to cure tension, headaches and also colds, tickly coughs and bloated stomachs. I’ve used it on all my family for years and now my daughter is passing it on to her daughter. The Earth supplies us with everything we need to keep fit, well and healthy. That is why homeopathy is the right choice for me.
Professor David Bellamy, TV botanist, 79 I support homeopathy as it’s safe and cheap. Compared to the usual drugs, it can be effective. Many homeopathic medicines are derived from natural things like cowslip, which can be used for a number of complaints including eczema. More and more people are now using homeopathy and realising the benefits of a more natural approach to healthcare.
