More than a third of American adults use some form of complementary or alternative medicine, according to a recent government report. Natural remedies have an obvious appeal, but how do you know which ones to choose and whether the claims are backed by science?

Today, New York Times “Really?” columnist Anahad O’Connor begins a weekly series exploring the claims and the science behind alternative remedies that you may want to consider for your family medicine cabinet. The Remedy: Arnica

The Claim: It relieves pain.

The Science: Arnica Montana, a plant native to mountainous areas of Europe and North America, has been used for centuries to treat a variety of pain. Athletes rub it on muscles to soothe soreness and strains, and arthritis sufferers rub it on joints to reduce pain and swelling. It’s believed that the plant contains derivatives of thymol, which seems to have anti-inflammatory effects.

Either way, scientists have found good evidence that it works. One randomized study published in 2007 looked at 204 people with osteoarthritis in their hands and found that an arnica gel preparation worked just as well as daily ibuprofen, and with minimal side effects.

Another study of 79 people with arthritis of the knee found that when patients used arnica gel twice daily for three to six weeks, they experienced significant reductions in pain and stiffness and had improved function. Only one person experienced an allergic reaction.

The Risks: Arnica gels or creams can cause allergic reactions in some people, but it is generally safe when used topically. However, it should never be rubbed on broken or damaged skin, and it should only be ingested when in a heavily diluted, homeopathic form.

Silica is made from pure flint. This mineral is found widely in nature, in animals, in vegetation. This is a very deep, long acting and slow acting remedy representing the tubercular miasm. It does not warrant frequent repetition and is reputed to produce mineral deficiency if used to excess.

Silica is reputed to remove splinters and foreign objects – literally any foreign body from anywhere in the body may be expelled. Silica may also open up old wounds if there is scarring or embedded foreign objects, so new healing can occur after the foreign body has been expelled. This may also be old infection which has not quite cured – TB scars in the lung may reopen so have a care! Silica must be used with care in cases of silicosis where old miners or stonemasons may have dust or bits of debris locked into their lungs. Also beware of pacemakers – it may be safer not to use this remedy, but take professional advice and use alternative remedies. Also beware of contraceptive coils, dental fillings and artificial hips etc! It is common place in homeopathy for the body to eject unwanted or foreign parts!
Silica is reknowned for helping in situations that have never been well since vaccinations, as these represent a foreign body, especially vaccinations of protein substances. This remedy is also a specific for people who have never been well since the suppression of sweat, especially breast cancers where underarm antiperspirant has been used extensively or where cold water or cooling the body is used to stop sweat. Also, suppression of symptoms with medications or douches, even sudden cessation of breast feeding – all suppressions in silica types can quickly lead to serious complaints. Never use silica to stop breast milk in weaning.
Silica types are small, thin, pale, delicate, refined but not haughty people with clear skin and fine hair which may lack colour or hang lankly or fall easily. They can be very obstinate with no give at all, but with not enough energy to insist, fixed, unbending and headstrong, nervous, oversensitive, shy and timid and lacking in grit. They learn to conserve their energy for essentials and will not deal with irrellevances and they may fear that their mind will not hold up so they can appear submissive on the surface, but deep down they will never give up. They may worry about getting things right and become sleepless from apprehension. They may suffer from lack of confidence even terror of failure, but once they start they tend to do well, but they tire out and mentally they can go blank. They can be clairvoyant, even pathologically so at times. They can display great courage and capacity for work, and they may well push themselves and not be stopped by lack of stamina but by weakness. Alternatively they may be averse to work due to exhaustion. They may be weepy but never cuddly. They are intellectual and are hard working and conscientious but may have no stamina physically or mentally, they are yielding and submissive due to the need to conserve energy, they can suffer from brain fag. They can be aesthetic and sensitive, to music, restless, fidgety, never totally relaxed, they can start from noise, have anticipatory fears, fears of pins, of injections, of needles, or sharp objects. They are easy in contact with others and appear mild and reserved. They are gentle and polite up to a point, but if pushed they will be obstinate, peevish and difficult.
Silica types are chilly and very sweaty, profuse around the head, armpits and feet, which can be cold and offensive and can rot socks. They may suffer from a sensation of a hair on the tongue. They may suffer from sharp, splinter like pains, swollen glands, hard glands, infected glands, abscess in glands, chains of infected glands, poor skin, poor nails with white spots indicating poor nutrition, softening and caries of bone due to malnutrition, erosion of cartilege, problems with mucous membranes, their teeth may seem translucent with slow dentition, deficient enamel, early decay, sensitive teeth and chronic problems with teeth resulting in suppuration of gums. They may suffer from scar tissue. They can suffer from thick yellow catarrhal discharges with thick nasal crusts, loss of smell, nose bleeds, ulceration and bone loss in nose, cracks in corners of nose and mouth, peeling of lips. Ears suffer under this remedy with infections, aches, perforations, deafness, noises, otitis media, eustachian tube dysfunction, glue ear, deafness and allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Silica types can suffer from genito urinary catarrh, urinary tract infections with pus in the urine, kidney stones and kidney complaints leading to impotence.

Silica is too slow a remedy to be indicated in acute illness, so it is seldom useful for throat infections, but it is efficatious if someone suffers from recurrent throat infections or a tendency for acutes to settle into the throat or onto the chest. Silica often represents the chronic overall picture here.
This remedy is used to treat abscesses, especially recurrent abscesses, boils, carbuncles, wounds that are infected or won’t heal, lumps, nodules, cysts, fibroids, warty growths, moist eruptions, pimples and pustules. In acute suppuration silica may resemble mercury to which it is inimicable, so this is why hepar sulph is given in between these two remedies in a sequence to speed up the healing of abscess formation. Silica is a specific remedy for ailments of stone cutters or those who work in dusty environments such as miners, builders, asbestos exposure with the resulting bad chests. This remedy is also used to treat fissures and fistulas.

Silica types may also suffer from corneal ulcers, styes, falling eyelashes, iritis, cataracts.

Silica has a *keynote of a bashful stool which will not expel and then retreats back up the anus. They can suffer from constipation, especially before and during the menses. They suffer from nausea and headaches which are not necessarily acute, but have a tendency to be chronic and recurring, which start at the back of the neck and travels up and over the head to settle behind the right eye and better from warm wrapping. These headaches are often brought on by drafts and by chill.
Chronically, silica is used to treat epilepsy which may have onset after vaccination, after suppression, from overstrain or overwork, and is worse at the new or full moon.
Silica children may be undersized and look undernourished and suffer from assimilation problems and failure to thrive. Rickets is a possibility. They may have large heads with open fontanelles and bodies which are too long and too thin with big bellies and sunken chests with arrested development and emaciation. Babies may suffer in the womb if mum had chronic diarrhoea in pregnancy and be born with malnutrition. Babies may vomit breast milk. Silica children may cry when spoken to kindly and be bashful especially with new people. Well silica children are charming, cute, lively but always delicate with great intelligence. However, they are perfect little horrors when crossed and will fly into tempers, yell, shriek, kick, show stubborn sense of reason – you will be able to reason with them and they may understand immediately and change their behaviour. There is a danger here of mental suppression as the child strives to come into line with expected behaviours which they will understand – but watch for miserable cold kids with icy feet who are listless and get sat upon easily by others and who cry when spoken to and do not want to be noticed.
They are worse from drafts (even if they are unaware of them at the time), chill, damp, suppression, vaccination, new or full moon, overwork, overstrain, warm stuffy rooms*, cold dry weather*, cold damp weather, getting wet, bathing, warm food, milk*, fat*
They are better from pressure, profuse urination, warmth*, warm wrapping, cold dry weather*.

They desire cold food and drinks, eggs.

They are averse to salt, meat, milk*, fat*.

Calc carb is made from oyster shell, fixed, immobile, innactive. It is the major psoric remedy and it is a major polycrest. This is a very slow acting and a very deep remedy. Calcium is essential for brain development. The traditional homeopathic sequence of sulphur, calc carb, lycopodium follows the sequence or re-enactment of evolution.

SRP* strange, rare and peculiar symptom of coldness in the diseased part.

Calcs may appear to be simpletons but they have a very specific intelligence, they may pause before answering or be slow to answer, weep when telling symptoms, offer passive resistance, suffer autism, be obstinate with fixed ideas and fear of specific things, such as the phone, ladybirds or nuclear war, or suffer many unspecified fears, and they fear insanity, loosing control under stress and they may give up on prosperity or success as a result even though they suffer from a fear of poverty and are insecure. They fear death, dark, ghosts, they may see grinning faces or horrible forms when closing their eyes, they fear the supernatural, cruelty, injustice, and they are impressionable and dread upset routines and strange surroundings. They are fearful and vulnerable especially of small things, germs, contagion, disease, heights. They will put things off for ages, but progress well with tasks when started. They are very consciencious and may excell at one subject and be poor at others, they are slow to mature and may well be aged 40-50 before they settle to their occupation. They are often slow, forgetful, depressed, anxious, worriers and suffer from cold feet mentally and literally. They may have no awareness of time. They may focus on small insignificant things. They hate being the centre of attention or being looked at. When healthy, calcs are reliable, they finish what they start, they are plodders, methodical, they don’t take risks.
They are reliable but slow – to develop, to walk, to teeth, to mature. Defects of calcium metabolism are often seen, with rickets, brittle bones, bony exostoses, poor closure of the skull fontnelle and the dentition may be delayed or deficient. Metabolic imbalance may result on osmosis and osmotic pressure defects, waterlogging lower extremities or other parts. The skin may fester easily and be slow to heal.
They may have a rotund moon face or a wrinkled appearance with squares in the wrinkle pattern with scaggy necks, large heads. They may sweat, especially cold sweat on the head with damp feet and hands, and their sweat smells sour and may be profuse enough to soak their pillows at night. They may have a handshake like a wet fish. They may be chalky, pasty, flabby, chilly, with poor circulation and aching bones or arthritis. They may suffer from overstrained muscles, chronic strains, cramps, especially night cramps, swollen glands, car sickness, anaemias of all kinds, profuse irregular menstrual bleeding, epilepsy, fibroids, growths – not necessarily malignant, polyps, warts, sluggish liver and gall bladder syndrome, bad teeth or nails, breast tenderness before menses with profuse poor quality breast milk.

Calc carbs can suffer from terrible nightmares, grind their teeth in their sleep, wake at 3am. Nightmares starting suddenly in the elderly may be due to an impending stroke.

Calc children may suffer from acidity, traditional ‘sour’ babies. They may suffer from chronically swollen glands. They feel better when constipated and suffer when they have diarrhoea, as if they need to hold onto the stool due to their slow metabolisms. Adults are better for diarrhoea and worse for constipation. Calc children often suffer from religious affections and ask difficult questions about death, about god, about why are we here? They may be overly concerned about others or others’ suffering. They may suffer night terrors. Calc babies are big, solid, earthy, and may remain as calcs until the day they die. Adult calcs often suffer from frequent colds which are not evident in calc children.

Calcs are worse from 2-3am, suffer right sided complaints, worse at the full moon or certain moon phases, from cold, damp, any exertion = breathlessness, being away from home = homesickness, things out of the ordinary = feel exposed and vulnerable, criticism, weeps from admonition, drafts, wind, sex – though they may have a strong sexual desire – they will prefer the same life long partner. They are worse from pressure either physical or mental, horrible stories will unmask them. They may be worse from ascending. They can be allergic to penicillin or aspirin.

They are better for a dry climate, their own surroundings = desire to go home, familiarity.
They like bland foods, dairy foods, eggs, potatoes, whipped cream, ice cream, milk, cheese and indigestible items such as earth, chalk, coal. They may eat one thing to the exclusion of all others, or have eccentric tastes, or prefer to eat only things that constipate them. They must eat breakfast. They may suffer excessive thirst for cold drinks at night.

Phosphorus was ‘discovered’ in the modern sense in 1669 AD by Hennig Brand, an alchemist. He named it for Lucifer, the light bearer. This element burns in contact with the air, so it is kept in cold water for safety. It is an essential element necessary for the brain and nervous system.

Phosphorus as a remedy is known to be quite violent in its reaction at times, so use only 30c or below untul you are sure of the reaction in each particular patient.

It is a major acute remedy in homeopathy, used for coughs, colds, flu, laryngitis, fevers and chills, night sweats, haemorrhages, vomiting, jaundice and liver problems. A *keynote of phosphorus is of head colds which settle on the chest with a dry tight cough which is exhausting and worse for talking, laughing, open or cold air or change of temperature and accompanied by a sensation of a weight on the chest, fever and chills, high temperature in a well looking patient, possibly with a bursting headache. They may still have an appetite even though they are ill. They are intensely thirsty for cold drinks but may vomit these when they become warmed in the stomach after a few minutes. They may have colds which centre in the throat causing hoarseness.
Phosphorus is the major tubercular remedy, both for the miasm and for the disease TB itself and for pneumonias. In chronic disease, the picture is of increasing debility, consumptive symptoms, anaemia, liver and gastric ulceration with haemorrhages, leukaemias and quick deterioration. This remedy also has an affinity for the liver in hepatitis.
This remedy has profuse bleeding from anywhere with little cause, with blood streaked discharges, from coughing, from vomiting, from blowing the nose, from the gums, from intermittant menstrual bleeding, from cuts that will not stop bleeding unless with cold applications. They may vomit or faint from the sight of blood or from gory sights or even from talk of bleeding.

It is also used for the ill effects of general anaesthetics and intoxicants or never been well since anaesthetics or intoxicants. It is useful for complaints from getting wet in hot weather, and from physical and mental exertion.Phosphorus types may find the human voice difficult to hear, with otherwise good general hearing.

Phosphorus children tend to be slight, lean, lank, tall, long fingered with a short palm. They grow very fast in spurts, often outgrowing their strength to become tall, weak adolescents. They may suffer from diarrhoea especially when younger. Children may suffer from bone pains or growing pains.

Phosphorus types have bright eyes and long lashes, graceful, refined, intelligent, alert, interested, warm, exciteable, nervy, sensitive and quick, often with a red cast to their colouration, no matter what their racial background. They may be narrow chested, flush easily, have thin transparent skin and suffer from static electricity. They may suffer from night terrors, fear, fear of death, sensitive to atmospheres especially emotional, exhilaration or fear of thunderstorms. They are chilly people who flush when excited and from hot food. They like taking their clothes off.Phosphorus may suffer from dandruff or hair loss after grief, or grey hair after grief.

Phosphorus types can become tired and exhausted when they diffuse all their energy out into to environment like smoke because they have no barriers and pour everything out. They can be restless and fidgity They are unfocussed and spaced out, and flit from one thing to another with great bursts of enthusiasm, outgoing with effortless movement into new areas, but they can loose enthusiasm and interest and go flat, they may even descend into depletion and become unfocussed and apathetic, lazy, overwhelmed and they loose their natural sympathy for others and they loose their sociability and become indifferent. However, they do not become spiteful or vitriolic in such states. They will rejuvenate with new interests because they are unreserved and credulous and easily influenced. They live on their nerves and can become fearful and worry about the future and jump and start from situations, from sleep. Their emotions go out freely to others but they need reassurance and they expect attention. They can be self centred and they like to be magenetised and mesmerised. They are often interested in subjective persuits, sensitive, clairvoyant, acute senses with highly exalted perceptions. They may well be acutely clairvoyant and psychic. They may jump at every thunderclap and be aware of the slightest mood change in companions, they suss people out very quickly. They become depressed and disheartened as evening approaches. They have a great fear of ghosts, dark, certain people, of being alone, of crowds, of disease but they will be easily reassured.Phosphorus types are dreamers and will fall instantly asleep anywhere and will wake quickly and cleanly just as quickly. They may sleepwalk of suffer turbulant dreams and act them out, especially stuff they don’t want to deal with in the full light of day.

They may be preoccupied with sex but desires outrun capacity, with possible impotence but no embrassment. They are very sexual and very attractive to others, but flat when indifferent.

Phosphorus types may have long, thin stools where the anus remains open afterwards *keynote, or even involuntary stools. Alternatively, their stools may look like sheep pellets.

They are worse for warm food and drink, which they may vomit once it is warmed in the stomach, from lying on the left side, from going upstairs, from twilight, from touch, noise, odours. They are better for cold food and drink, from open air, from sleep, from washing in cold water, cat naps They desire salty foods, milk, fish, being stroked. Phosphorus resembles cats in this way, or even Irish Setter dogs who jump all over you and want to be stroked. They crave cold food, ice cream, salt, chocolate and juicy refreshing things and tasty foods. They can be very hungry and become weak and empty if not fed.

They may be averse to fish and fats and tea.

A very deep remedy. Sulphur is a natural mineral, a yellow rock which will burn with a blue flame. Sulphur has been used as a medicine for a very long time. In homeopathy it has a cetrifugal action and stirs up the vital force. This remedy is often over prescribed because it is the most commonly indicated remedy being the largest polycrest remedy and the leading psoric remedy in the materia medica.

Classically, this remedy is used to cure the ill effects of drugging (legal and illegal!) They tend to overdose on pills as their body is often uncomfortable and they just keep taking pills or medicines for a very long time. As they have such strong constitutions they may ‘get away’ with this behaviour for a very long time. Sulphur is classically seen in chronic diseases caused from suppressed eruptions and from over medication.

A good remedy for relapsing conditions, for symptoms that HAVE NEVER BEEN WELL SINCE…

Sulphur types suffer from either enormous appetites or no appetite (rarely). They are intensely thirsty and may prefer to drink rather than eat.

They desire sweets, fats, spicey food, alcohol, apples and salads.

They are averse to fish, eggs, milk – which can dissagree with them, acids.

They may have red eyelids and redness where mucous membranes change from dry to wet (*keynote). They may suffer from catarrhal conditions.

They suffer greatly from gastric disturbance and belch a lot with the odour of rotten eggs. They suffer from bile and heartburn. flatulence and wind, diarrhoea which is painless but drives them out of bed at 5am (*keynote) which they HATE and is very offensive. Alternatively, they suffer from constipation. Sulphur types cannot stand their own smell. They can suffer from redness around the anus and red orifices in general, and their discharges are acrid and excoriating.

They can be very weak and faint at 11am (*keynote) if they cannot have something to eat at this time. They may ‘sink’ before meals and need snacks. If sulphurs do get a drink habit, a ‘pick me up’ because of this need for ‘a little something’ they will be quite easy to cure of this habit once warned.

Sulphur is normally found in eruptions on the skin of the planet and as such they can suffer from every type of skin complaint you can think of, which breaks out easily and breaks down readily and does not heal well. Every little injury will suppurate and fester. Their skin is often thin and sensitive to acne and urticaria. They can suffer from itching all over and LOVE TO SCRATCH, even in public. Their skin can burn and will be much worse from washing and hot baths, which they may avoid for this reason. Urticaria and irritant rashes. Hair is dry and coarse or oily with dandruff. Eyelashes may turn in on themselves and get stuck.

They can be quite arthritic with chronic joint complaints or fibrous and ligamentous complaints.

Their hands may tremble with fine work.

They have unstable circulation and suffer from patches of heat. They are always hot and may never feel the cold, with hot hands, hot feet, hot head and burning soles. They will stick their feet out of bed to cool them down and may be upset by the heat of their beds. They can suffer from hot flushes and hot patches. They suffer from burning pains (*keynote). They do however love the sun.

They may sleep in cat naps night or day. They may have very vivid dreams, especially between 2-5am – they may not be able to sleep then. They may wake up singing. They may suffer from aggravations on wakening.

Periodicity (peaks of symptoms ) every 7-14 days can be marked. For example Friday night headaches. They can often be worse at weekends, mornings and at 11am.

Sulphur types are often worse at rest, standing or sitting and better horizontal. They are often called lazy because they won’t stand if they can sit, and won’t sit if they can lie down, and they will sleep if they can get away with it. Standing is uncomfortable for them, so if they cannot sit they will wander.

They are worse at the full moon, from heat, cold wet weather, menopause, water, bathing, stimulants, staying in one position, standing.

They are better from moderate temperatures, dry warm weather, lying down especially on the right side, drawing up affected limbs, open air, motion, sweating.

Be careful with sulphur in chronic skin conditions, as it may well cause complicated and chronic aggravations.

Sulphur has a mind which is quick and shallow. Lycopodium has a mind which is quick and deep.

Classically, sulphur types are thin and tall but stooping, or fat and round individuals, scruffy, dirty, dishevelled, rank, offensive, odiferous which persists even after washing, smoking dope and using hallucinogens, they theorise a lot and ignore their domestic appearance. They are not really alcoholic but like to drink a lot of beer. Alternatively, they can be absent minded professors, very academic, theorising a lot, to the extent that they ignore their physical appearance, discoverers of important things. They are not really alcoholic but they like to drink a lot of whiskey (or other spirits).

Work can be uncomfortable for them and they will day dream selfishly, and may spend their imaginary winnings but never get around to posting the coupon. They are often fed up, actively bored, shiftless and entirely self centered and indulgent. They display no gratitude, avoid the real issue very skilfully, especially if this means activity or movement. They are not invested in their bodies. They are invested in their minds. Often they are fascinated by mysticism, orientalism, occult or oesoteric and philosophical issues, displaying innappropriate curiosity into obscure causes. Nosiness is natural to them and is often quite innappropriate. They can ‘walk a million mental miles to avoid one physical step’. “Getting up out of bed is enough exercise for anybody…”
All sulphur types know something about everything, often Jacks of all trades but master of none. They share an obsession for the acquisition of knowledge and can be egotistical and want to be famous for their discoveries. They are always asking “why?” They are great inventors, especially time saving or effort saving inventions, but their inventions often take up more time than the time saved by their inventions.

They may live in a great mess but the area they work in will be very organised, even though it may well look chaotic, they know their own mess and where to find things. They start but don’t finish. They can be superficial dabblers. They may have been professional but may have given it all up to ask questions such as “who is god?” They may get so ambitious with their search they can burn out mentally to become lazy day dreamers, hypercritical of others, even selfish and delusional. Classically, they think ‘rags are beautiful’.

They can be hard, irritable, peevish, plethoric, robust, red faced, very vital, very intelligent, idealistic, extrovert and sociable. They will often need face to face interaction and recognition, eg. a doctor who works long hours with underpriviledged patients – their way to change the world. They may shun money and worldy things but they need recognition, and this can lead to problems if they are passed over for promotion, which they often are due to their poor personal presentation. They do not make good managers. They love to be the centre of attention.

The slightest criticism makes them feel worthless.

Sulphur types can suffer from anxiety about their loved ones, especially parent child situations. They can pace the floor in anxiety and play out dreadful scenarios in their minds. They suffer anxiety about their own health and fear infectious diseases and dirt, even though they are unaware of their own dirtiness. They fear heights to the point they may not be able to help you climb a ladder.

Sulphur children are stubborn, pugnatious, leaders, red lipped, red faced, sweaty, and they do not want to sleep at night. They may crave beer. They may lie in bed in their own diarrhoea or not notice at all that they are constipated.

Lycopodium’s mind is quick and deep. Sulphur’s mind is quick and shallow.

It is made from the spores of the club moss. It is found across Northern Europe, and it is the oldest form of plant life on the planet. This very simple organism gives us a very deep remedy which acts like a mineral remedy. Its common name is Wolf’s Claw, and club moss is completely inert in its crude state, a yellow powder which has been used for centuries to coat and colour medicinal pills.

Club moss grows alongside other mosses and ferms, also ancient plants. Millions of years ago, club moss was well over 150 feet in height, but today it is one of the smallest of plants. It relies on the other plants to enable it to produce chlorophyll, so it is inherently poor at assimilation of nutrients. It makes up for this by slow and steady growth. It is weak and not vigorous, but steady and obstinate. Its spoors have a hard coat with a soft inner pulp, and the plant requires a cool shady and solitary place to grow close to the other plants it depends upon. Club moss has slow reproductive development. It contains five fatty acids. In homeopathic potency, it is very important polycrest remedy. Lycopodium is one of the five basic constitutional remedies.
